Hecks has been a Cleveland burger house since 1974, and the Ohio City room keeps that reputation central. Its Burger Au Cheval stacks a patty with bacon, white cheddar, a fried egg, and sour cream, a rich take that leans into indulgence. The kitchen now runs several area locations, but the Bridge Avenue original remains the reference point for the burger.

Heart of Gold builds its Ohio City reputation on one smash burger, a 70-30 angus blend pressed thin and set on an oversized milk bun from Leavened Bakery in Tremont. It comes with melty American cheese, dill pickle chips, thin-sliced onions, and a creamy maggi mayo. The white-and-brick room keeps the focus tight on doing a single burger well.

Cordelia, on East Fourth Street, treats its burger as a shareable centerpiece. The Burger Box splits two Certified Angus Beef smash patties layered with smoked cheddar, shaved sweet onions, and a house special sauce on a Japanese-style milk bun, finished with everything spice and the kitchen's Nana's Kool-Aid pickles. It reads more composed plate than quick counter burger.

This Lakewood gastropub pairs a deep, German-focused beer list with a burger built on local color. Its West Side burger crowns the patty with a potato-and-cheddar pierogi from Rudy's Strudel, caramelized onions, New York sharp cheddar, and sour cream, a nod to the neighborhood's Eastern European roots. The beer selection is as much the reason to visit as the food.

Doinks works out of a 25-seat retro space in the Waterloo Arts District, keeping its burger list short and a little irreverent. The Bonn Mi burger borrows from a banh mi, piling cucumbers, jalapeños, kimchi, and pickles onto the patty with a spicy house Doinks sauce, while the plain OG covers the classic craving. It is a small kitchen with an outsized personality.
