Taqueria Guadalajara · South Side
Josefa Trejo and Francisco Vasquez opened Taqueria Guadalajara on South Park Street in 2007. The tacos al pastor are the order: pork with pineapple, lime, garlic, cilantro and oregano, plus what the kitchen keeps to itself. The room is small and the salsa is the part regulars talk about.
El Sabor de Puebla · Emerson East
The kitchen cooks from Puebla rather than from the generic Tex-Mex register, which is what sets it apart on a north-side stretch without much competition. Go for the regional plates rather than the combination platters, and expect a short menu done properly.

Gloria’s on the far west side draws people for the tacos, a wide run of Mexican standards, the margaritas and the room itself. Junction Road puts it well out from downtown, which is part of why it reads as a neighborhood restaurant rather than a destination. Come with a group and order across the menu.
