Tabal Chocolate · Wauwatosa
A Downtown Wauwatosa bean-to-bar shop where owner Dan Bieser makes certified organic chocolate straight from the cacao bean, a business he began in 2012 in a rented kitchen above Amaranth Bakery and named for the Mayan word for relationship. The shelves carry single-origin bars from places like Peru and Ecuador, flavored bars with chili peppers, blood orange, huckleberry or masala chai, cocoa nibs and housemade chocolate drinks. Order a single-origin bar.
Indulgence Chocolatiers · Walker's Point
The Walker's Point shop of Julie Waterman's chocolate company, one of three around the metro. Her truffles come in flavors like balsamic fig, coconut habanero, blackberry espresso and cabernet, and the Milwaukee Chocolate bar is dark chocolate with sea salt, stamped with the city skyline. The Walker's Point shop also offers virtual pairing classes that match chocolate with wine, beer, scotch and cheese. Order the Milwaukee Chocolate bar and a box of truffles.
Burke Candy · Riverwest
A Riverwest candy shop run by Tim Burke, the third generation of his family in the business, with numerous kinds of chocolate in the case. The salted caramels follow his grandfather's original recipe, and the butter toffee comes from a recipe passed down from his wife's grandmother. Order the salted caramels and the butter toffee.
Freese's Candy Shoppe & Heavenly Roasted Nuts | West Allis
A West Allis candy shop, family owned and operated since Otto Freese opened it as a retail shop and soda fountain in 1928, and still making its candy in house. The turtles have a loyal following, and the fairy food is as light and airy as it comes. A sister counter sits in the Milwaukee Public Market. Order the turtles and a bag of fairy food.
Niemann's Homemade Candies & Ice Cream · Wauwatosa
A family-owned candy shop on Harwood Avenue in Wauwatosa making old-fashioned candies from recipes handed down through the generations, among them barks, coconut clusters and peanut brittle. The chocolate-coated almond butter toffee is among its most popular treats. Order the almond butter toffee.
