Shane Confectionery · Old City
Brothers Eric and Ryan Berley, who brought the old-school ice cream parlor back at Franklin Fountain, run this Old City candy shop next door as an homage to Victorian-era candy. The dark and milk chocolate bars start from cacao roasted and ground in-house, and the counter sells handmade buttercreams, caramels and cordials by the heart-shaped box. Order a box of buttercreams and a dark chocolate bar.
Éclat Chocolate · West Chester
Chris Curtin spent decades training with chocolatiers in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, France and Japan before opening this chocolate shop on High Street in West Chester. His team makes its chocolates from single-origin, small-batch Peruvian beans or from European couverture. The bar to know is the G. Love Kitchen Sink Bar, which layers milk and dark chocolate with peanut butter, caramel, Dutch pretzels and fleur de sel. Order the Kitchen Sink Bar.
Aunt Charlotte's Candies · Merchantville
A family-run Merchantville candy shop that began as a caramel maker more than a century ago, and walking in still feels like a step back in time: baskets of old-time candies, shelves of trinkets and novelties, and a big display of handmade chocolates. The signatures are the cashew crabs, made with chocolate, caramel and cashews, the smooth meltaway chocolates filled with creams, and the caramels themselves. Order the cashew crabs and the caramels.
Lore's Chocolates · Old City
A chocolate shop on South 7th Street whose chocolates are made in the original Goldenberg's Peanut Chews factory a couple of miles north, since the two companies share ownership. The shop turns out chocolates in Philadelphia shapes, the Liberty Bell, the LOVE statue and Independence Hall, alongside sea salt caramels, toffee and marshmallows covered in milk and dark chocolate. Order a chocolate Liberty Bell and a box of sea salt caramels.
good good chocolates · Queen Village
Good Good makes its chocolates by hand at its Queen Village shop on South 4th Street. The case runs to heart-shaped bites filled with passion fruit and yuzu or with peanut butter, caramels, bars flavored like cookies and cream or crème brûlée, and bonbons in quantity. Order a box of bonbons and a passion fruit and yuzu heart.
