Cinderella Bakery & Cafe is an old-school Russian bakery and cafe on Balboa Street in the Richmond District. Its borsch is ruby red and thin in texture but rich from beef stock, filled with cabbage, potatoes and beets and finished with dill and a dollop of sour cream. The kharcho, a soup of Georgian origin, is made with lamb shoulder and thickened with rice, with sweetness from caramelized onions and tomato paste and a powerful Georgian spice blend, khmeli suneli, that carries cinnamon, clove and dill. Order the borsch, or the kharcho on a chilly, foggy day.
