Michael Ekwall opened this Cuban room on California Avenue in 1997 and it is still trading there. The Chronicle's Robin Davis found glasses of mint and sugar lined up at the bar waiting to become mojitos and Hemingways, under paintings by Cuban artists on sponged mustard walls. She singled out the Cubano, which Ekwall calls the hamburger of Cuba: roasted pork layered with shredded ham and cheese on crusty bread, served all day. Metro's Christina Waters went for the ropa vieja with moros y cristianos.
