Rusty Ladle is a tranquil soup counter in the Outer Sunset, a few minutes from Ocean Beach, where chef and owner John Lindsey offers four soups at a time from a narrow 700-square-foot room. Tomato soup and clam chowder are the standbys, and the other two change weekly, from Mexican meatball stew to miso vegetable soup or gumbo. A bar of oyster crackers, seasonings and about a dozen bottled hot sauces lets you dress your own bowl. Order the tomato soup with basil cream, and dip the Schmelty, a grilled cheese on schiacciata from Andytown next door.
