Despite the name, Rhode Island Monthly sends you here for the loaded dog menu rather than the wieners: the Fancy Pants Dog on a truffle buttered bun with caviar, creme fraiche, dill and chives, the New Englander with lobster sauteed in butter and Old Bay on a garlic toasted bun, and the Toronto Dog with hot honey maple bacon and garlic aioli. Order one of those, or a Pocket Rocket off the newer specialty menu. The Atwells Avenue shop is the Providence one; a second trades on Thames Street in Newport.

The Granny Boo's Kitchen walk-up window inside Ogie's is better known for tots, but Rhode Island Monthly argues for the Hot D'Ogies alongside them. The large plain version comes simmered on a buttered bun; the Coney Ogie arrives under chili and cheddar bechamel, and both can be made with vegan substitutes. Order a Coney Ogie and a basket of tots, ranch dusted or French Canadian. It is the one pick on this list with a full bar attached to the window.

Rhode Island Monthly notes that Harry's is consistently ranked at the top for burgers in the state, then makes the case that the kitchen grills a serious hot dog too. Both Providence rooms run saugy dogs on a grilled buttered bun, with ketchup, mustard and onions included and chili and cheese sauce available for a small upcharge. Order a saugy with chili and cheese. This is the North Main Street counter; the other Providence room is Harry's On the Hill, up on Atwells Avenue.

The newest counter on this list, on Washington Street downtown, and Rhode Island Monthly's editor in chief describes the build precisely: Sabrett all beef franks in Martin's potato buns, piled high. The Lingwall keeps it simple with sauerkraut and Grey Poupon, the Bacon One carries bacon jam, crispy onions, whole grain mustard and chives, and there is a tribute to Rhode Island Dynamite with meat sauce, cheddar and French's mustard. Order the Bacon One. The kitchen keeps daytime hours and closes Sundays.

A taproom on Tockwotton Street where Rhode Island Monthly points to a standing weekly deal: dollar hot dogs every Thursday. Outside that window the taproom sells one for six dollars or two for eight, both with a bag of chips, and runs saugy dogs topped with house made chili and cheddar cheese for six dollars each. Order a saugy with the chili and a beer from the taps. It is the only pick on this list where the dog is the side and the brewery is the draw.
