106 Main keeps downtown drinking simple with inexpensive beer, a broad liquor shelf, and a room designed for conversation rather than spectacle. Daily service and late weekend hours make it a reliable fallback when more elaborate plans feel unnecessary. The bar's regulars, unfussy pours, and decade-plus tenure provide the atmosphere that decor alone cannot manufacture.

Dain's Place feels like a neighborhood basement upgraded with a serious burger griddle and well-kept taps. Sports, picklebacks, tater tots, and familiar faces set the rhythm, while the compact Ninth Street room encourages strangers to talk. The kitchen gives the bar daytime utility without sanding away the easygoing character that appears after dark.

Green Room is a traditional gaming hall built around full-size pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, foosball, and coolers packed with beer. The Broad Street space is dim, direct, and largely unchanged by Durham's newer bar trends. Players can settle into a long evening, while nonplayers still find an uncomplicated place for a bottle and conversation.

Slim's compresses live music, cheap drinks, stickers, pool, pinball, and a smoker-friendly patio into a narrow Wilmington Street building. Bands play close enough to erase the line between stage and crowd. New ownership has kept the 1999 venue's rough edges intact, preserving a room where volume, regulars, and accumulated history matter more than polish.

The Old North Bar revived the former Accordion Club space with cold beer, classic cocktails, hot dogs, and a large patio. The new operation respects the address's neighborhood-dive history without pretending nothing changed. Careful drinks sit comfortably beside boilermakers and domestic cans, creating a useful bridge between an industry bar and a casual cocktail room.
