Las Golondrinas is a pie company whose options celebrate New Mexican culture: a New Mexican chocolate pie and a dulce de leche pumpkin pie, set beside fruit empanadas, Mexican wedding cookies and biscochito cookies. Order the New Mexican chocolate pie, and take a dulce de leche pumpkin home.

Flying Star got its start in 1987 when Jean and Mark Bernstein opened Double Rainbow in Nob Hill, later renamed Flying Star; this entry is the Nob Hill cafe on Central Avenue. Its baking is done from scratch, and its holiday pies run to pumpkin, pecan, strawberry rhubarb, cherry, apple and coconut cream, with whole pies ordered online or in person. The coconut cream is not overly sweet, and the caramel apple comes topped with vanilla ice cream. Order a slice of the coconut cream.

Saratori's opened in 2007 as an Italian pastry shop in the same San Mateo strip mall as Tully's deli, named for the owner's daughters Sara and Tori, and in 2023 the family joined the bakery, market and deli into one space. Italian cookies fill the case, and the pies run to pecan, cherry, apple, apple crumb and pumpkin, with personal-size pies sold in orders of six or more. Order the apple crumb pie, and a half dozen personal pies for a crowd.

Vic's Daily Cafe is a Greek-rooted diner on Osuna Road that takes great pride in its desserts, and its pies show it: the banana cream is thick and moist, and the coconut cream is another standing pick, with a cherry strudel on the counter beside them. Order the banana cream pie after breakfast or lunch.
