Flying Star got its start in 1987 when Jean and Mark Bernstein opened Double Rainbow in Nob Hill, later renamed Flying Star; this entry is the Nob Hill cafe on Central Avenue. Its baking is done from scratch, and its holiday pies run to pumpkin, pecan, strawberry rhubarb, cherry, apple and coconut cream, with whole pies ordered online or in person. The coconut cream is not overly sweet, and the caramel apple comes topped with vanilla ice cream. Order a slice of the coconut cream.
