Basic Kitchen was named Best Restaurant for Vegetarians in the Charleston City Paper's 2026 readers' poll, with Five Loaves Cafe as runner-up. The Harleston Village kitchen runs an entirely plant-based menu for the month of January each year, alongside its regular vegetarian-forward offerings.

Huriyali was founded by College of Charleston graduates Ruchi Mistry and Tom McFall, selling sandwiches, smoothies and vegan green grits made with cashew milk. It tied for Best Acai Bowls with Beech in the Charleston City Paper's 2026 readers' poll, and has since added a James Island location.
