La Soupe, the nonprofit chef Suzy DeYoung founded in 2014, turns rescued surplus ingredients into chef-made soups for people facing food insecurity, and the small retail store at its Walnut Hills kitchen sells those soups to the public, fresh and frozen, from a menu that changes daily with what has been donated. Order the classic chicken noodle, made with chicken stock, egg noodles, lemon juice, herbs and a kick of chili flakes; the options have included lobster bisque and cheesy broccoli too.

Silver Ladle, a downtown fast-casual soup, sandwich and salad counter open since 2012, specializes in soup, with ten on offer by the cup, bowl or quart. Order the mock turtle soup, a local favorite, made gluten-free here and topped with a chopped egg. For something heartier there is the Loaded Baked Potato, topped with chopped bacon and cheddar-jack cheese, and tomato basil is the lighter pick.

Silverglades Delicatessen has been feeding Cincinnati for more than 100 years, and its downtown deli offers two homemade soups a day, rotating daily and sold by the cup or the bowl. Past soups have included butternut squash, stuffed pepper and vegetable. Order whichever of the day's two soups appeals, alongside the sandwiches and salads that make the deli a one-stop lunch.

The National Exemplar has served diners at the Mariemont Inn since 1983, and its Hungarian mushroom soup is one of the handful of favorite menu items that keep regulars coming back, alongside the prime rib and the liver and onions. Order the soup: a velvety bowl with paprika, celery and plenty of chunky mushrooms, and one of the restaurant's signature dishes.

Red Fox Grill has been a downtown breakfast and lunch staple since 1965, and its soup is made in-house every day. Past soups have included tomato, chicken noodle and beef barley. Order the daily soup, for dine-in or carryout, and bring cash, the only payment the restaurant accepts.
