Saffron De Twah · East Side
Saffron De Twah brings Detroit's east side its only Moroccan menu, and Hour Detroit calls the restaurant's Moroccan Hot Chocolate one of a kind. The cup is built on house made cardamom and finished with a torched orange blossom marshmallow, a departure from a plain cocoa mix. The magazine notes the Halal bistro already stands apart on cuisine alone before the drink enters the picture. Order it on a weekend visit, since the restaurant now keeps Friday through Sunday hours.
Rose's · Marina District
Hour Detroit describes the hot chocolate at this Jefferson Avenue diner as close to a home cooked drink as the restaurant's food gets, sweet without being over the top. It is built on organic cocoa, house made whipped cream and locally sourced milk rather than a flavored syrup or add ins. Order it alongside the pancakes the restaurant is known for, which is how the magazine frames the whole stop: a straightforward, comforting cup to go with a straightforward, comforting plate.
Five15 Media, Mojo and More · Royal Oak
By day this Royal Oak coffee shop pours espresso and mochas, and Hour Detroit points to its own Frozen Hot Chocolate as the reason to come back after dark turns it into Drag Queen Bingo. The magazine calls it a step up from a childhood Swiss Miss packet, arguing six flavors, including salted caramel, banana, raspberry, peanut butter, peppermint and orange, beat a single standard cup. Order the salted caramel version, then stay for a bingo show if the timing lines up.
