Chef Nabil Al Saba has run this Frankfort Avenue room for more than twenty years, and the lamb and beef gyro is the sandwich people keep coming back for. Louisville Magazine went back to eat it again, which is the whole review. Order the grape leaves as well, since the place is named for them.

Food & Dining says it channels the late Falafel House, and the Baxter Avenue counter turns out gyro sandwiches, chicken and beef shawarma, and kebabs off the grill. It is a quick lunch operation more than a dining room, which is the right format for a sandwich you want handed to you hot.

Robin Garr's Palestinian run favorite works a forty item menu of hummus, falafel, shawarma and gyros, which as he points out are not only Greek. The kitchen now operates from a stall inside Logan Street Market, so you can build a whole table around it with whatever else the market has going.

Rehan Ahmed's halal kitchen came back after losing its Fourth Street home to redevelopment, and it now builds gyros and shawarma on house made pita at Dutchmans Lane. Food & Dining covered the return. The pita is the difference: soft, thick, made in house, and sturdy enough for the lamb.
