Press picks, until locals rank their own Top 5s. Sourced from the local food press. As seen in LEO Weekly. Updated August 2026.

The Brown Hotel · Downtown
The origin. Chef Fred Schmidt invented the Hot Brown here in 1926. LEO's breakfast guide sends you to J. Graham's Cafe inside the hotel as the canonical version, turkey and bacon under Mornay on toast.
J Graham's Cafe · Downtown
Brown Hotel's lobby-level cafe. Home of the original Hot Brown sandwich. Weekday a la carte breakfast and a weekend Kentucky buffet brunch.
The Goose Eatery & Hangout · Lyndon
The former Goose Creek Diner, relocated to Lyndon as The Goose. LEO-era reviews call the Mornay here the nearest suburban analogue to the Brown Hotel's, with crispy bacon and toast that never goes soggy.
Rubbies Southside Grill & Bar · South Louisville
LEO Weekly readers voted its Kentucky Hot Brown first in the 2024 Readers' Choice. Toast goes under turkey, bacon, béarnaise, cheddar and tomato, out of a Southside Drive room that has been open more than thirty six years. It is a neighborhood bar and grill rather than a hotel dining room, and the Hot Brown is better for it.
