Open since 1995 and voted first in LEO Weekly's 2024 Readers' Choice Mexican category. The kitchen now runs solely out of the Bardstown Road room, having closed its original Frankfort Avenue location, and the menu still leans on grilled fish, chile rellenos and a margarita list ordered by the pitcher. Small room, long wait on a weekend.
Guaca Mole Modern Mexican · Ormsby Station
Opened in 2012 by the restaurateurs behind Havana Rumba, and reviewed by LEO Weekly's Robin Garr. Guacamole is mashed to order in the molcajete, and the elotes callejeros come straight off the grill with lime and cotija. The room sits out at Ormsby Station and draws a suburban crowd that keeps the patio full through the summer.
La Suerte Louisville · Highlands
A Bardstown Road bar and restaurant LEO Weekly covers for its crossover cooking, where tacos and sushi share a menu without either feeling like an afterthought. Brunch is the draw: huevos rancheros, and chorizo gravy poured over biscuits. Later in the evening the room turns back into a bar, and the kitchen keeps going right along with it.
Gustavo's Mexican Grill, Hurstbourne
A locally owned kitchen with four rooms around the metro, which LEO Weekly readers put in the leading group of the 2024 Readers' Choice Mexican category. The Hurstbourne Parkway location is the Louisville flagship, serving fajitas, molcajete plates and enchiladas to a steady weeknight crowd. Portions run large, and the salsa comes hot without anyone having to ask.
El Nopal dixie hwy-valley station
A long running Louisville family Mexican kitchen that readers voted into second place in LEO Weekly's 2024 Readers' Choice Mexican category. The Dixie Highway room is the most established of its Louisville area locations, serving the combination plates, burritos and sizzling fajitas that made the name. It is the kind of place people have been eating at since childhood.
