The Star Tribune describes cinnamon and sugar carrying out of the red barn at this White Bear Lake orchard, where the baked goods are packed and ready to go. Its famed apple cider doughnuts run $4.39 for a half dozen and $7.79 for a dozen, plain or sugared, and the paper suggests carrying them to a picnic table in the field. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine adds a corn maze, a pumpkin patch and more than 20 apple varieties sold prepicked. Order a half dozen sugared and find a table.
Aamodt's Apple Farm · Stillwater
The Star Tribune's first stop at this Stillwater farm is the barn, for a half dozen apple cider doughnuts at $9.90, fluffy under a cinnamon sugar crunch with the tang of cider carried in the dough. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine describes an orchard open seven days a week through the season, with pick your own Monday through Friday and Minnesota apples sold inside the barn from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, plus a cider house, a winery, a goat farm and grilled brats outside. Order the doughnuts first.
Everly Farms Winery · Minnetrista
Mpls.St.Paul Magazine names the cider donuts here as famous and puts Everly Farms among the metro's most popular orchards, closer in than most, under a name it carried for years as Minnetonka Orchards. The fall roster runs to pick your own and bagged apples, hot cider, pumpkin patches, hayrides, live music and animals to visit. Admission is free Monday through Friday and rises to $10 an adult and $7 a child on weekends. Order the cider donuts with a cup of the hot cider.
