Pupuseria Reina La Bendición · Nolensville Pike
The chicken tamales are a quieter entry into this Salvadoran kitchen than its richly filled pupusas. The masa is firmly set, the chicken finely shredded and the seasoning mild. Start with a tamal, then make room for the pupusas that draw much of the attention. The Nolensville Pike storefront puts both dishes on the same menu, making it possible to compare two approaches to corn masa at one table.
El Cubilete · South Nashville
Fresh tamales join the soups, stews, breakfasts and combo plates at this Harding Place Mexican restaurant. Portions are generous, and an enchilada plate or pork ribs in salsa verde can be shared between two people. Start with the tamales, then choose a larger plate if the table wants more. The Harding Place branch is the location singled out for this menu.
Sweet Sofia’s · Bellevue
Paletas and ice cream are the first draw at this Bellevue shop, but the kitchen also sends out tamales when they are fresh. Chicharrón preparados and street corn fill out the savory side of the menu. Ask what has just come out of the kitchen before choosing a filling, then finish with something cold. The mix of frozen treats and hot food makes this a different tamale stop from a full-service cantina.
Rosepepper Cantina · East Nashville
Tamales sit among the familiar Mexican classics at this East Nashville cantina, alongside chile rellenos. The dishes are consistently good, and the large patio leaves room for a group to linger. Order tamales as part of a wider table, especially when some people want tacos and margaritas. The Eastland Avenue room is a casual choice for a long meal outside.
