Mr. Cookbop · Downtown
A Korean soup-and-stew specialist on Crown Street from owner Kenny Kim, who converted the former Ramen Kuro Shiro space. CTbites frames it around hearty, brothy comfort food. Order the gukbop with pork and sundae (Korean blood sausage), the samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), and the haemul pajeon, a seafood scallion pancake; the bulgogi is there for the table that wants grilled beef too. The focus is the bowls, meant for cold New Haven nights.
MAMA SHIM · Downtown
Korean fried chicken back on College Street in the former Bonchon space, in the College and Crown building. Per the New Haven Independent, owner Eileen Zhou named the shop for her mother's family name, Shim. The chicken comes as drumsticks, strips, or boneless, fried and sauced, with pickled radish or coleslaw on the side. It is a focused, homestyle Korean spot built around one thing done well, the fried chicken.
Hanmi Foods · East Rock
A husband-and-wife Korean spot from Jae Sim and Yeji Song in the former Chestnut Fine Foods storefront on State Street, open since mid-March. The New Haven Independent reports the kitchen specializes in dosirak, the Korean packed lunch box, alongside a rotating spread of banchan. It shares a block with the family's Hanmi Oriental Market, so the pantry runs deep. Come for the boxed lunch format and the homestyle side dishes.
