Anchor Oyster Bar opened in the Castro in 1977, and its cioppino, the San Francisco seafood stew by way of Italy, is rich with tomato and full of briny mussels, sweet clams, tender cod and crab claws. Owner Roseann Grimm's recipe comes from her grandfather, an Italian immigrant who worked on local crab boats and was one of the original cooks who adapted the stew to local ingredients. The smaller portion can be split alongside other dishes, and the larger one is meant for sharing. Order the cioppino.
