Mugs-Up Drive In

Columbia's only locally owned drive-in, per Vox Magazine, where manager Brandon Kewley has worked since he was 12 and whose grandfather Ray Kewley bought the place on July 2, 1955, when it belonged to a chain of 60. Vox describes carhops bouncing between cars and the kitchen with silver trays of smashed burgers, cheese fries and frosted mugs of root beer floats. Kewley's own order runs to the Zip and the chili cheese dog.

This Orange Street drive-in opened in 1956, and Vox Magazine reports its zip burgers and its hot dogs are equally popular, alongside the homemade root beer it calls a must have. Inside Columbia points here specifically for the chili dog, made with the house chili and served with cheese fries. Bring cash, because the window does not take cards, and add a mug of the root beer.
