The Austin Chronicle calls this the city's oldest outdoor biergarten and dining hall, built by German immigrant August Scholz in 1866 as a place for the local German population to eat, drink and discuss politics. Austin Monthly adds that it is the oldest continually operated business in Texas, and that the menu blends Texas barbecue and Southern cooking with German plates.
