Scholz Garten · Downtown
The Austin Chronicle calls this the city's oldest outdoor biergarten and dining hall, built by German immigrant August Scholz in 1866 as a place for the local German population to eat, drink and discuss politics. Austin Monthly adds that it is the oldest continually operated business in Texas, and that the menu blends Texas barbecue and Southern cooking with German plates. Order a giant Bavarian pretzel or the Schwarzbier-infused brat and a cold bier at one of the garden tables.
Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden · Rainey Street
Time Out Austin counts 104 beers on tap here and another fifty in bottles and cans, with no Bud or Miller among them, poured for day drinking at what it calls a relaxed indoor and outdoor beer garden on Rainey Street. Austin Monthly writes that the American-style garden carries more than thirty house-made sausages, from a plain bratwurst to a duck, bacon and fig frank and a South Texas antelope merguez. Order a sausage and ask a server to build you a flight.
