The volunteer fire department in Swissvale opens its fryers on Ash Wednesday and keeps the fish fry going every Friday through Lent. Beer-battered cod and baked cod lead the menu, joined by crab cakes and a beer-battered grilled cheese, with homemade haluski, pierogies, macaroni and cheese, fries, coleslaw and hush puppies on the side. The fry runs until the food sells out, so phoning in an order ahead of time is strongly encouraged.
