Community Kitchen Pittsburgh · Hazelwood
Hazelwood's nonprofit culinary training center runs a fish fry every Friday in Lent, frying haddock to raise funds for its job training and hunger relief programs. Students work every part of the fry, from prep and waiting on customers to changing the fryer oil. Get the fish on a bun or on a plate, with hand-cut fries, slaw, haluski, macaroni and cheese or cheddar pierogies, and a beer from Hazel Grove Brewing, which pours at each fry. Takeout can be preordered online.
Allegheny Elks Lodge #339 · Deutschtown
This North Side lodge holds its fish fry on Friday evenings through Lent, and the Pittsburgh Banjo Club usually plays while people eat. The cod comes from Wholey's and is served breaded or grilled on Breadworks rolls. Every fish entree comes with two sides, chosen from fries, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes and coleslaw. Eat in or carry out, and bring cash: the lodge takes nothing else.
Swissvale V.F.D. · Swissvale
The volunteer fire department in Swissvale opens its fryers on Ash Wednesday and keeps the fish fry going every Friday through Lent. Beer-battered cod and baked cod lead the menu, joined by crab cakes and a beer-battered grilled cheese, with homemade haluski, pierogies, macaroni and cheese, fries, coleslaw and hush puppies on the side. The fry runs until the food sells out, so phoning in an order ahead of time is strongly encouraged.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish - St. Teresa of Avila Church · Ross Township
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish runs its Lenten fish fry at the Saint Teresa of Avila campus in West View. The fry's organizer holds a taste test each December to choose the season's fish, and a frozen-at-sea Icelandic cod has won a few years in a row. Dinners pair a choice of entree with two sides: fries, baked potato, macaroni and cheese or coleslaw.
Original Oyster House · Downtown
This Market Square bar and restaurant has sent breaded oysters, jumbo fish sandwiches, clam strips and crab cakes down by dumbwaiter from its upstairs kitchen to a street-level room lined with photographs of boxers and five decades of Miss America portraits. Mary Americus came up with the batter recipe for its breaded oysters and fish. Order a fried fish sandwich, with clam chowder on the side.
