A New Gloucester orchard and bakery the same family has run since 1906, about half an hour north of Portland. The Press Herald lists more than fifteen apple varieties on the trees and sends visitors into the shop afterward for hot spiced cider, doughnuts and apple pie. Alex Schwartz, who maps New England's cider doughnuts, told The Boston Globe that Thompson's is the top pick in Maine, soft and springy and moist with the apple coming through.
