Thompson's Orchards · New Gloucester
A New Gloucester orchard and bakery the same family has run since 1906, about half an hour north of Portland. The Press Herald lists more than fifteen apple varieties on the trees and sends visitors into the shop afterward for hot spiced cider, doughnuts and apple pie. Alex Schwartz, who maps New England's cider doughnuts, told The Boston Globe that Thompson's is the top pick in Maine, soft and springy and moist with the apple coming through. Hours run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily in season. Order the doughnuts hot with spiced cider.
Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards · Cumberland
A Cumberland farmstand in business since 1812 that grows more than fifty kinds of apple. The Press Herald notes there is no pick your own here and points instead to the market counter, where cider doughnuts sit next to pies, pastries, bread, apple butter, honey and maple syrup. Some of the trees on the property are more than 150 years old and still bearing. Hours run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Order cider doughnuts and a jug of cider, and add a pie in late fall.
