Lois The Pie Queen · North Oakland, Oakland
A North Oakland diner serving Southern breakfasts and soul food that lives up to its name with its pies. Check the display case for what has not sold out, eat a slice on the spot and take another home. The key lime pie has a thick filling on a tender, buttery graham cracker crust, and there is a lemon icebox pie as well; the sweet potato cheesecake, a seasonal flavor, is dense and creamy. Order the key lime pie, and the Reggie Jackson special with fried pork chops if staying for breakfast.
Heidi's Pies Restaurant · San Mateo
An old-school San Mateo diner, open since 1970, that turns out just about any pie flavor, from classic pumpkin to mango. People flock here in summer for the seasonal peach and strawberry pies. The banana cream is luscious with the banana slices still intact, and the super-tart blueberry pie comes with a generous serving of sour cream on top. Order a slice of the banana cream, or the peach or strawberry pie in summer.
Three Babes Bakeshop · Mission
A Mission pie shop from baker Lenore Estrada, also a fixture at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, whose seasonally changing pies are made with organic fruit from local farms: stone fruit pies with fruit from Frog Hollow Farm in summer and apple pies with fruit from Devoto Gardens and Orchards in fall. The classic all-American apple pie is made with organic Northern California fruit and sweet cream butter and finished with hand-fluted edges. Gluten-free options include a key lime pie on a gluten-free graham cracker crust. Order the apple pie.
Blue Plate · Bernal Heights
A Mission Street restaurant serving seasonal American comfort food since 1999, with a key lime pie on its dessert menu that has a devoted following. The pie has a custardy but firm texture, full-force lime flavor and a sturdy graham cracker crust, and it comes topped with an ample dollop of fresh whipped cream and lots of lime zest. Whole pies can be ordered to take home. Order the key lime pie.
Black Jet Baking Co. · Bernal Heights
A Bernal Heights bakery on Cortland Avenue that turns out sweet and savory pies. The chicken pot pie comes loaded with fresh herbs, and the sweet side runs to sour cherry, coconut cream and salted honey maple pies. Order the chicken pot pie and a slice of the salted honey maple.
