The Apple Pan · West Los Angeles
The Apple Pan is a West LA diner from the 1940s, with waiters working a U-shaped counter, and its pies are as well known as its burgers. They come old-school, topped with fluffy whipped cream, in a dozen flavors that run from pecan to pumpkin cream, sold by the slice or whole. The banana cream pie holds a thick layer of chilled banana slices on a buttery crust. Order the banana cream pie, or the pecan with ice cream.
Pie 'n Burger · Pasadena
Pie 'n Burger is a wood-paneled Pasadena diner, open since 1963, where people sit at a long counter with a cheeseburger and a slice of pie a la mode. The pies run to classics such as apple, pecan, rhubarb, pumpkin, custard, cherry and even mince, seasonal fruit such as strawberry, blackberry and peach, and meringue pies piled high, among them butterscotch, lemon, coconut cream, banana and chocolate. A slice can come with ice cream or house-made whipped cream. Order a meringue pie.
Du-Pars | Restaurant and Bakery · Fairfax
Du-par's has sold pies since 1938, and its diner at the Original Farmers Market serves old-school dishes such as patty melts and buttery hotcakes. The pies are homey classics sold by the slice, whole and in mini sizes: peach, sweet potato, apple, pecan, cherry, rhubarb, coconut cream and custard, with a pumpkin pie kept on year-round, and some of the recipes date back to the 1930s. Order the pumpkin pie or a slice of the coconut cream.
House of Pies · Los Feliz
House of Pies is a Vermont Avenue staple in Los Feliz, open since the 1960s, where people stop for a cup of coffee or a slice of pie after a late showing at the Los Feliz 3. It also sells its classic fruit and cream pies whole to take home, in flavors such as apple, peach and Bavarian chocolate, and there is always a seasonal special to try. Order a slice of the Bavarian chocolate or the seasonal pie.
Fat + Flour · Culver City
Fat + Flour is pastry chef Nicole Rucker's counter-service cafe on Washington Boulevard, with a case full of fresh slices under golden crusts. Her pies lean on fresh seasonal produce, with butter, custard and chocolate, and the fruit pies rotate with the seasons, from a strawberry rhubarb crumble to a sour cherry double crust. The creamy key lime pie, a menu mainstay, strikes a sweet-tart balance. Order a slice of the key lime pie.
