Isla Caribbean Cuisine · Downtown
Isla Caribbean Cuisine plates one of the city's few true Cuban sandwiches, the dish This is CNY's Charlie Miller featured in his Syracuse Sandwiches series. Built downtown on South Warren Street, it layers sweet ham, Swiss, and roast pork into a dijon-and-cream-cheese spread, then presses and cuts it into a three-story tower served with yuca fries and house sauce. Order the full Cuban and split it, or size down to the lunch portion.
Mamacita's Spanish Fusion · Fayetteville
Sara Giocondo built Mamacitas from a farmers-market tent into a food truck and then a North Syracuse storefront before consolidating in Fayetteville. Jacob Pucci's syracuse.com Dining Out Review centered on the Tampa-style Cubano, layering slow-roasted pork, salami, ham, Swiss, pickles and yellow mustard on a pressed roll, and singled out the fall-apart roast pork against the vinegary zip of the pickles. Order the Cubano.
