Yamasho sushi steakhouse · Syracuse
Highly regarded, with the Red Blossom and M16 rolls as first-timer picks.
Kyoko's Japanese Restaurant · Fayetteville
A Fayetteville Japanese restaurant where chef-owner Yosuke Honda works the sushi bar. This Is CNY's Jared Paventi reviewed it and singled out the chirashi don ($21.95) as a generous bowl of raw fish, sweet-and-buttery salmon nigiri, and the Blue roll built on sweet blue crab; the pork-belly steam bun he called too good to share. Paventi wrote that Honda sets a bar for excellence few area sushi bars meet. Order the chirashi don and salmon nigiri.
Bleu Monkey Cafe · University Hill
A Marshall Street cafe near campus that This Is CNY's Jared Paventi reviewed for its sushi, noting it has run for two decades on quick, affordable, reliable food and a following for Sushi Fridays. He worked through rolls including the dragon (eel, cucumber, avocado, teriyaki) and the obachama (salmon, tuna, avocado, wasabi, tempura crunch), found the fish fresh and well balanced, and called the steamed pork dumplings soft and savory. Order a spread of specialty rolls and the pork dumplings.
