Good Hot Fish · South Slope
Ashleigh Shanti runs this counter at the corner of Buxton and Collier on the South Slope, which opened in January 2024 after years as a monthly pop-up at Burial Beer. The Local Palate walks a menu drawn from Black Appalachian fish-camp cooking: eight ounces of catfish fillet fried to a golden hue in the Good Hot Fish sandwich, a sweet potato cabbage pancake built on rice flour and Farm and Sparrow cornmeal, and trout bologna, steelhead pressed into a chub with bologna spices. Order the sandwich.
Sistas On Montford
Khiyara and Rhonda Wynn opened this soul food counter inside the Montford Convenience store in September 2025, named for Khiyara's grandmother Margaret Harrison, who cooked at her own Ritz Cafe in the same neighborhood and died in late 2024. The Food Section reported it became one of Asheville's most talked-about new food spots within months. WSPA's Let's Eat segment singles out the broccoli casserole, the fried fish seasoned with Goya and Cajun spices, and a potato salad that uses celery seed in place of celery.
