Mayer Bros Cider Mill · West Seneca
A West Seneca cider mill the Mayer family has run since 1852, and which the company says is the largest apple cider processor in North America. The Buffalo News says the draw inside is the frozen cider slushies and the doughnuts, small and dense and best coated in cinnamon or powdered sugar. Step Out Buffalo has the mill open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through late November. Order a half dozen cinnamon sugar doughnuts and a cider slushie to carry around the store.
Smith's Orchard Cider Mill · Pendleton
A family run apple farm on Mapleton Road that bills itself as a no frills operation. The Buffalo News lists apple picking, fresh cider, cider slushies and fried doughnuts, and says the mill floor is open to the public so visitors can watch a batch press. Step Out Buffalo has the farm reopening for the season in mid September and open Friday through Sunday only, which is why the lines build for the doughnuts. Go in the early hours, order fried doughnuts and a cider slushie, then pick a bag of apples.
Kelkenberg Farm · Clarence Center
A Clarence Center farm on Wolcott Road whose fall season runs from mid September to Halloween, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The Buffalo News lists cider and cinnamon doughnuts among the fall food, next to apples, fresh pressed cider, raw honey and homemade pies, with Resurgence Brewing pouring on the grounds. A hayride runs out to the pick your own pumpkin patch. Order cider doughnuts and a jug of the fresh pressed cider.
