Schutt's Apple Mill · Webster
A Webster cider mill and country store open since 1918. It started frying its own cakes in 1993, after Hutteman's closed, and CITY Magazine describes them as crusty, hearty and cutely chubby, sold plain, glazed and in cinnamon sugar. Evan Schutt runs two production shifts a day at the peak of apple season, and the counter stays open year round, with blueberry and cherry cakes turning up as well. Order a warm bag of cinnamon sugar fry cakes and an apple frost soft serve.
Green Acre Farm & Nursery · Greece
A farm and nursery on Latta Road where Janice Hassett fries the fry cakes from a recipe she learned from her mother. CITY Magazine calls them petite, with a crusty outside and a soft interior, and they run mid September through Halloween only, in plain, cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar and frosted. Glazed is missing on purpose, because Hassett says they do not need it. Fry cake fun facts are posted at the shop to entertain the line. Go on a weekday morning and order a half dozen cinnamon sugar cakes warm.
Zarpentine Farms R&K · Hilton
A Hilton farm on Burritt Road whose fry cakes come in plain, cinnamon sugar and glazed. CITY Magazine describes a truly crunchy outer layer around an interior that is not too heavy, and singles out the apple fritters as glazed, gooey and somehow crispy, with thinly sliced apples running through them. The bakery also turns out pies, scones and cherry chocolate turnovers, and the farm keeps daily hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the fall. Order cinnamon sugar fry cakes and one fritter, early, because the fritters go quickly.
Mc Pherson Orchards · Le Roy
A seventh generation family orchard on Oatka Trail in Le Roy that added a bakery in 2009. CITY Magazine describes fry cakes made fresh to order while you watch through the kitchen's screen door, light in color and texture with a soft cakey quality, served hot in a paper bag with cinnamon sugar or without. The bakery runs mid September through October only, on Saturdays and Sundays, while the orchard keeps daily hours. Come on a weekend morning, order the fry cakes hot, and add an apple pie or a crisp.
Wickham Farms · Penfield
A Penfield farm that grew from a 1986 roadside stand into a fall destination on Sweets Corners Road. newyorkupstate.com sends visitors for a fresh cider doughnut, the pumpkin house and the harvest throne, plus fall Shake Ups, funnel cakes and the Caramel Apple Blossoms at the Apple Bar. CITY Magazine's own fall guide names the farm for its hot cider and from scratch baked goods, next to the corn maze and the hay ride out to the pumpkin patch. Order a fry cake and a Caramel Apple Blossom, and go early on a weekend.
