LoLA · Park Circle, North Charleston
Shrimp creole is a rarer sight on Charleston menus these days, but LoLA in Park Circle still runs it, served with a hunk of praline cornbread on the side. The Post and Courier flagged it as one of the last places in town keeping the dish alive on a regular menu.

William Chan, who also owns Ichiban Grill, opened this Viet-Cajun boil-in-the-bag seafood restaurant on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, blending Cajun-style boils with Vietnamese seasoning inside a dining room the Post and Courier calls shiny-fixtured and fun. The buttery house special sauce carries the flavor. Order the boiled shellfish over the fried appetizers, and ask for the house sauce on the side.

The kitchen at this West Ashley Southern restaurant carries New Orleans notes, including a splendid bowl of gumbo that Charleston City Paper called warm, hearty and brimming with spice. It has built a reputation on comfort food done with real technique, priced for a regular weeknight visit rather than a special occasion.
Nola's Creole & Soul · Summerville
Nigel Drayton, who also runs Nigel's Good Food, opened this 3,800-square-foot Summerville spot serving gumbo, spicy chicken wings, char-grilled oysters, beignets and banana bread pudding. The Post and Courier covered the opening as a New Orleans-inspired addition to the Charleston-area dining scene, built around dishes Drayton grew up eating.
