Charleston City Paper's Jeff Allen went hunting for a room dedicated to interpreting sushi creatively rather than piling on corny roll names and expensive air-freighted fish, and wrote that this out-of-the-way West Ashley spot near Citadel Mall makes a prime candidate. He describes it as unpretentious, with no ego and no fanfare. Sit at the bar and order sushi rather than the fusion plates, and look for the flaming bowls of liquor.

Shiki's bright 35-seat East Bay Street dining room has run for 22 years, filling most weekend nights with young and old diners over carafes of sake, local sour beers and glass bottles of Coke. The Post and Courier's sushi roundup counts it among the city's top rooms for the style. Order an omakase seat if one is open.
