Orapax has cooked Greek and Mediterranean plates in Norfolk's Chelsea neighborhood since 1966. Three generations have kept the moussaka, lamb, Greek salad, and pizza traditions in the room, with a covered patio for a slower meal.

Azar's has served Mediterranean cooking in Virginia Beach since 1988. At the Hilltop café on Laskin Road, chicken tawook and vegetable dishes make a full meal. The family's market is a separate Pembroke location.

Amber Lantern serves Mediterranean-leaning seafood beside a Chesapeake marina. Elizabeth River views make the waterfront dining room the draw for a longer dinner.

The Norfolk counter builds shawarma and falafel into pitas, wraps and bowls. Hummus, tahini, garlic sauce, fried eggplant and pickles give each order its character, with the same 21st Street location still serving the neighborhood. Order chicken shawarma in a pita with the toppings you want, or take a falafel bowl with tahini.

Baladi brings Palestinian and broader Middle Eastern cooking to Virginia Beach's Hilltop area. The kitchen's mezze, hummus and falafel make a strong vegetarian meal, while meat and fish dishes offer another route through the menu. Muhammara brings pepper and walnut to the table alongside the dips. Start with the mezze and add the falafel.
