The Rathskeller · Mass Ave
Indianapolis Monthly puts you at a picnic table in the biergarten behind the Athenaeum on a warm evening, unable to hold a conversation over the polka and the dancing feet on gravel, with a 36 ounce cup of Spaten lager in hand and German Renaissance Revival stonework framing the lot. Dan McMichael bought the place in 1995 and added American bar fare to the wurst and schnitzel menu. Order a 36 ounce lager in the garden and a schnitzel inside the Kellerbar. The garden runs through the warm months.
Half Liter Brewery, Bar, & BBQ · SoBro
Indianapolis Monthly describes chef Blake Ellis and owner Eddie Sahm's Bavarian themed barbecue and beer hall as carrying the rollicking energy of Oktoberfest with the laid back charm of a Texas brisket pit, tucked into the soaring back half of the Winthrop Avenue complex. Order the brisket on a platter with smoked wings, collards, ranchero beans and waffle fries, and drink a German dunkel or Kolsch with it. A pet friendly two story covered patio opens up in warm months. Lunch and dinner daily.
