Christopher Elbow Chocolates · Crossroads
Christopher Elbow works from a Crossroads shop on McGee Street, and The Pitch ranked its hot chocolate first in the city in 2009, describing a cup nearly thick enough to hold a spoon upright and rich enough to split with someone. The paper's 2014 tour singled out the ginger drinking chocolate, whose tang cuts a sweet chocolate and caramel base, and the house marshmallows, denser and sweeter than the store bought kind. KCUR's Charles Ferruzza lists cocoa noir, peppermint, Venezuelan spice and mocha. Order the ginger, with the marshmallows.
André's Chocolates · Country Club Plaza
Andre's is a Swiss confiserie and lunch room on Main Street by the Plaza, and The Pitch reported that the counter will not make hot chocolate during the 11 to 2 lunch shift because each cup takes so long. Its 2014 tour ordered the chili spiced version, a smooth drink whose spice bites the back of the throat without taking over. IN Kansas City describes a frothy cup built on the house 60 percent Swiss style dark chocolate, with house made whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a chocolate heart. Order the chili spiced.
