Lou Lou on Market · NuLu
The East Market Street dining room extends the New Orleans focus of the original St. Matthews restaurant. Its Cajun and Creole menu spans gumbo, jambalaya and blackened fish, giving the NuLu location a broad range beyond any one signature dish.
J. Gumbo's Highlands
Former jockey Billy Fox Jr. started this fast casual Cajun counter in Louisville in 2005, and the format has not changed: about a dozen bowls of gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and drunken chicken ladled over rice, at a price that lets you eat here on a weeknight. The Grinstead Drive room is the surviving original.

Chef Lawrence Weeks draws on Louisiana and Mississippi roots in the former Mr. Lee’s Lounge space. Baked oysters, gator po’boys and a broad bourbon selection connect the menu to the Gulf Coast while keeping the room grounded in Louisville.

The owners brought a Cajun and Sicilian menu from a longtime Tampa restaurant when they took over the old Willow Lake Tavern on LaGrange Road. Gumbo brings the comfort-food side of the kitchen forward, and beignets make a fitting finish.
