Lou Lou on Market · NuLu
The East Market Street dining room carries the New Orleans focus of the original St. Matthews restaurant and widens it, with a Cajun and Creole menu that runs from gumbo and jambalaya to blackened fish. Food & Dining tracked the move into NuLu, and LEO readers picked it as their Cajun room in 2024.
J. Gumbo's Highlands
Former jockey Billy Fox Jr. started this fast casual Cajun counter in Louisville in 2005, and the format has not changed: about a dozen bowls of gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and drunken chicken ladled over rice, at a price that lets you eat here on a weeknight. The Grinstead Drive room is the surviving original.
North of Bourbon · Germantown
Chef Lawrence Weeks builds the menu out of his Louisiana and Mississippi roots in the old Mr. Lee's Lounge space, with baked oysters, gator po boys and a bourbon list deep enough to justify the name. Food & Dining wrote about the line this kitchen draws between Louisville and New Orleans, and the room feels like both cities.
Selena's at Willow Lake Tavern · East End
The owners carried a Cajun and Sicilian menu up from a longtime Tampa restaurant when they took over the old Willow Lake Tavern on LaGrange Road, and they have been cooking it since 2008. Robin Garr found real comfort in the gumbo, and the beignets are the reason regulars make the drive out east.
