Eastern Mediterranean and Levantine cooking in Westville, tagged Middle Eastern by CTbites. The Levantine focus keeps it distinct from the Greek and Turkish rooms on the Mediterranean list, and the Whalley Avenue address plants it in the heart of the Westville dining stretch.

The New Haven outpost of the Chater family's falafel house, which opened here on Howe Street in 1977 as the first expansion beyond the original Greenwich Village shop. Arts Paper marked its 45th year, and the Yale Daily News (Christina Lee) covered it feeding Yalies and New Haveners for over 47 years. Owner Suleiman Chater builds around Syrian and Damascus recipes, with mint grown on site. Order the falafel sandwich, the reason generations of students keep the line moving.

The Chapel Street second location of Mohamad Hafez's Syrian cafe, opened in January 2023 after the original Westville spot in 2020. Hafez, a Syrian-born artist and architect, brings the same home cooking downtown. Per CTbites, order the Pistachio Halloumi Panini and the falafel wraps, and finish with baklava or Turkish delight. It is a daytime cafe built on Syrian sweets and sandwiches rather than a full sit-down room.

CTbites (Jessica Ryan) recommends starting with the Dama Mix, a spread of hummus, mutabal, muhammara, and baba ghanoush, then the arayes (griddled meat-stuffed pita) and chicken shawarma, with knafeh to close. Opened in September 2024, it sits just over the New Haven line, well inside the metro.
