Edelweiss Biergarten · North Phoenix
Phoenix New Times reaches for the Bavarian origin of the form when it gets to this north Phoenix room, which the paper says has been here since 1952. The draw is an expansive selection of German brews poured at a picnic table, by the pint or by the larger stein, with a Hungarian and German kitchen behind it. PHOENIX magazine calls it a true German biergarten and a sprawling carbohydrate playground. Order the rinderrouladen, beef rolled around bacon and onions under gravy, or the shareable pretzel.
Wren Südhalle · Ahwatukee
Südhalle means south hall, and Phoenix New Times found large communal tables and benches flanking one end of the bar, which horseshoes around the room with 24 taps at its center split between Wren House beers, German and Czech imports, four wines and a cider. PHOENIX magazine trailed it as a European inspired beer hall from Wren House Brewing with chef Derek Christensen on the menu. The New Times calls it Wren House's Ahwatukee beer hall. Order the thick Nice Buns pretzel with brown butter and goat milk beer cheese.
Pedal Haus Brewery - Tempe
Phoenix New Times picks the Mill Avenue home base over the brewery's downtown Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler rooms when it comes to the patio, calling the Tempe space lively and built for groups. The paper notes it doubles as the designated away game watch party for Arizona State football, so the outdoor tables fill with the crowd and the screens on a Saturday. Order a Beach Cruiser Mexican amber and a flatbread, which is what the New Times pairs with the patio.
