Penn Brewery · Troy Hill
Pittsburgh Magazine follows the North Side brewery through its purchase by Austria native Stefan Nitsch, who restored the historic lagering caves and put events back into the biergarten. The magazine says the place has been pumping out suds since the 1800s, and that Oktoberfest here runs on live music, German food and Bavarian style pretzels, with head brewer Chris Rudolph making Munich style fest beer. The taproom opens Thursday through Sunday. Order a fest beer and a pretzel in the yard, and ask about the oak barrel aged Oktoberfest kept in the cave.
Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh · South Side
Pittsburgh Magazine calls this a giant Bavarian beer hall and biergarten along the Mon River, with the garden looking out at the Hot Metal Bridge. Staff wear lederhosen and dirndls, and the biers are brewed on the premises to strict German standards. The magazine describes the pour as a sloshed over liter glass the size of a small pail, which will work your arm when the room toasts. Oktoberfest runs three weekends from mid September. Order a liter of the house bier and a plate from the hall.

Pittsburgh Magazine places this open air beer garden nine stories above William Penn Place, on the roof of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in the middle of Downtown. The list runs to beer, wine, spirits and custom cocktails, and the magazine points at the BG Pretzel, a soft pretzel big enough to serve four. The garden opens evenings Tuesday through Saturday and takes no reservations. Order the BG Pretzel for the table and a beer, and go early on a clear evening for a spot at the rail.

Pittsburgh Magazine covered the opening of the beer garden next to this Lawrenceville brewery, which co-owner Ted Slesinski designed as a lounge like space that takes dogs, with mural artists brought in to paint the privacy fence in blocks of color. Ted and his brother Scott, who opened the brewery together, run monthly charity events in the yard, and the magazine reported an Oktoberfest with brats, kraut and spaetzle. Order a beer and take it out to the garden, and check the calendar first, because the yard fills around events.
