O’Scugnizzo was founded in 1914 after Eugenio Brullino began selling Maria’s tomato pies at church feasts. The family still makes sandwich bread in-house, slices mozzarella and grinds sausage for its pizza. The tomato pie carries more than a century of Utica history.

Founded in August 1914 by Eugenio Brullino, a Naples pastry chef who sold his wife Maria's tomato pies at church feasts, and run by the fourth generation of the family at 614 Bleecker Street since the 1960s. The Rome Sentinel's Thomas Caputo reports the sauce is cooked in a giant kettle in back, the shells and sandwich bread are baked there, the mozzarella is hand-sliced and the sausage ground in house. Order the upside-down pie, sauce on the crust and cheese on top.
