Asmeret Teklu has run this Eritrean and Ethiopian kitchen on Oak Street since 2004, and the Press Herald counts it among the longest-running Black-owned restaurants in Portland. Teklu grew up in Eritrea and moved to Maine in 1988. Every vegetarian dish on her menu is vegan, and she told the paper she sells more vegetarian plates than meat ones these days. Order the vegetarian plate on injera, and ask what greens came in that week.

An Eritrean and Ethiopian dining room that opened in 2014 on Washington Avenue's restaurant row, with Yemane Tsegai running the front of house and his wife Akbret Batha cooking. The Press Herald's Dine Out Maine review describes meter-wide family-style platters of finger food in a six-table room, where deciding whether to dip into the lentils or take the last hard-boiled egg is part of the meal. Its vegetarian menu runs entirely vegan. Order the vegetarian sampler of red lentil stew, simmered greens and stewed vegetables.
