River Street Sweets · River Street
The riverfront candy store the Strickland family opened in 1973 and still runs, where free samples of pralines made from cream, sugar, butter and pecans are handed to customers coming in off River Street. Candy began here with two fudge pots the family bought that year, later reworked into the praline pots, some of them still in use, and the cases hold fudge, bear claws, saltwater taffy and gourmet popcorn beside the pralines. Order a praline, then a slab of fudge.
Chocolat by Adam Turoni · Historic District
Adam Turoni's Bull Street chocolate shop is set up as a library, one of the rooms he and his partners imagined as parts of a stately manor with an Alice in Wonderland streak, and guests fill a tray with truffles as they browse. The truffles are built as much on wit as on looks, with playful shapes and flavor pairings, and his signature milk chocolate is fair trade. Order a tray of truffles.
All Things Chocolate & More · Richmond Hill
A Richmond Hill chocolate shop and cafe on Ford Avenue, owned by Sara Lopez-Smith, who left a career in insurance to chase a childhood dream. Its chocolatiers dip and decorate the treats in an array of chocolate flavors, and the case runs from chocolate-covered strawberries trimmed in gold to bourbon caramels, with nearly every dessert made from scratch. A full menu of breakfast croissants, sandwiches and sweet potato fries sits alongside. Order the chocolate-covered strawberries and a bourbon caramel.
