Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi · Southwest Waterfront
Chef Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean dining room at the Salamander hotel on the Southwest Waterfront draws on his Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Creole background. Plates come family-style: a crispy lamb dish that nods to Ben's Chili Bowl, curried branzino, barbecue greens, and a hoe crab finished with a sauce that echoes the city's Peruvian chicken joints.
Cane · H Street NE
A Trinidadian spot on H Street NE with a painting of President Obama eating doubles by the door. The doubles overflow with curried chickpeas, and the jerk wings sit in a 24-hour scotch bonnet marinade before three hours in the smoker; oxtail and snapper escovitch round out the plates.
The Angry Jerk - Dupont Circle · Silver Spring
A counter-service carryout on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring from Guyanese-born owner Jason Miskiri, whose mother makes the roti. Jerk chicken gets dry and wet rubs and up to a 48-hour marinade before a hardwood-charcoal roast, alongside braised oxtail, jerk shrimp, and whole fried snapper.
