Petsi Pies · Somerville
Petsi Pies is a Somerville bakery and coffee shop that specializes in pies, from streusel-topped apple-cranberry and sweet potato to seasonal apple crumb, mixed berry and chocolate-bourbon-pecan at the Beacon Street storefront. The chocolate-bourbon-pecan has a rich, dense chocolate filling under toasted nuts, the sweet potato carries ginger and brown sugar, and the Mississippi mud is made with Belgian chocolate. The pies are also sold cold at local shops. Order the chocolate-bourbon-pecan and a slice of the Mississippi mud.
Deluxe Town Diner · Watertown
Deluxe Town Diner is a Watertown diner that keeps much of its original classic design and serves house-made pie all day, so pie for breakfast is an option. The standards are cherry crumb topped with nuts, pecan and a double-crust apple; fruit and berry pies fill the warm months, and the colder months bring richer ones like a chocolate-walnut Derby pie and, typically, pumpkin. Order the double-crust apple or the cherry crumb with a cup of coffee.
Lyndell's Bakery · Ball Square
Lyndell's Bakery has made European-style baked goods in Somerville's Ball Square since 1887, and pies run through its year, blueberry, lemon and pecan among them. The creamy ricotta pie, sweetened with vanilla and lemon zest, marries the taste of a cannoli with the consistency of a cheesecake, and the custard pie can be ordered topped with toasted coconut. Everything is baked from scratch daily. Order the ricotta pie, and ask for the custard pie with the coconut on top.
Greenhills Irish Bakery · Dorchester
Greenhills Bakery is a Dorchester bakery on Adams Street whose pastries are rooted in Irish tradition and family recipes, with many kinds of pie among them. The rhubarb pie comes plain, without the usual strawberries, in a lightly sweetened crust, and a strawberry rhubarb is there for traditionalists; the blueberry pie uses small Maine wild berries with lemon juice and cinnamon, and the apple pie uses fruit from an orchard in Attleboro. Order the plain rhubarb, then the wild blueberry.
Drive-By Pies · Brookline
Drive-By Pies began with founder Fran Kolenik delivering pies by car from her home kitchen and is now a brick-and-mortar bakery on Cypress Street in Brookline. The range runs from a fluffy pumpkin cream pie to a pear and salted caramel pie with buttery undertones, and the chocolate cream pie comes with a velvety chocolate and cream filling in a flaky crust under heaps of whipped cream. Order the chocolate cream, then the pear and salted caramel.
