The Penguin Drive-In · Dilworth
A Charlotte name since 1954, dark for eight years and reopened at 1531 East Boulevard in Dilworth, next to Freedom Park. The retro drive-in menu came back with it, chili dogs and burgers and a patio, and the original Commonwealth Avenue building is gone for good, so this is the one that counts.
Brooks Sandwich House · NoDa
A cash-only walk-up window at 2710 North Brevard Street open since 1973, serving hamburgers, hot dogs and house chili until the afternoon runs out. It went dark for a stretch and reopened in December 2025, and the line at the window forms the same way it always did.
Clark's Snack Bar · Plaza Midwood
Lincoln Clark, formerly of Good Wurst, took over the same 3001 Central Avenue storefront in 2025 and turned it toward upstate New York frankfurters, kielbasa and brats. The menu is short, the dogs snap, and it is one of the few rooms in town treating the format like it deserves attention.
South 21 Drive In · Oakhurst
A carhop drive-in at 3101 East Independence Boulevard running since 1955, where you park, order through the window and eat in the car. Hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes, unchanged, in a building that has watched Independence Boulevard turn into something else entirely around it.
